Read MoreIn 2011, DAL Food began a pilot School Milk Programme (SMP) in partnership with the Khartoum State Ministry of Education, providing 16,000 underprivileged students in the greater Khartoum area with free packs of milk every day.

Dal Food has been supporting the School Milk Programme by providing long-life milk to 17,000 needful pupils in Khartoum State daily since 2011.
Consuming a pack of milk daily makes all the difference for students. From raising attendance rates to energetic after-school football matches, SMP is all about making a change in the lives of these school children.
According to teachers in beneficiary schools, the milk gives children the energy needed to enhance their ability to learn, so they can make the most of their time in the classroom and increase their chances of success. These promising results have motivated DAL Food to see the programme continue and take further steps to ensure sustainability.
In order to ensure programme sustainability, the utmost cooperation is needed from our committed partners so the initiative can be scaled up, replicated in different settings, and sustained over time.
The SMP is seeking to find more models of cooperation and engage schools, non-governmental agencies, and local businesses to sponsor the programme and sustain its operations.
Working with donors such as USAID and Cargill, the SMP has proven to be an accountable and transparent operation. All funds are put towards providing milk for the SMP beneficiaries, with DAL also covering transportation and storage costs, as well as the monitoring and evaluation of the programme.

DAL Food sincerely believes in the mission of the School Milk Programme and would like to turn it into more than just a successful example of corporate responsibility. It is our hope that the SMP serves as a model for public-private partnerships in Sudan, inspiring the rest of the business community to engage in development projects that support education and alleviate poverty and malnutrition.
The SMP is not just a programme that provides underprivileged students with safe and good quality milk, but rather part of an integrated model helping to develop the dairy farming industry in Sudan. DAL Food sources its milk locally, from its own farm as well as milk collection centres operating across Khartoum. After farmers sell their milk to DAL Food at these centres, it is transported to a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Khartoum North.
By paying an agreed amount for each litre of milk throughout the year, DAL offers the farmers the opportunity to plan future animal purchases and business developments. The local farmers are also provided with technical support on optimum hygiene practices, feeding for better yield, and medical care for their cows.
DAL Food’s strategy to source milk locally aims to significantly upgrade the industry standards by facilitating a boost in milk production and sustainable employment in the sector. Additionally, DAL Food is advancing the local milk industry in Sudan through long-term partnerships with local farmers, creating shared value for all stakeholders.
